Baby it's cold outside, even with a burqa

Our friend Beth Gottschling, who is working on a project for Women for Women International, arrived in Kabul early in January 2005, a few weeks ahead of the Bpeace mission team. She emailed Gwendy to bring her an extra sweater, and sent along these burqas in the snow.

Some women in Kabul (Afghanistan's capital) still wear the burqa. They come in many different styles (lengths and colors) and materials (georgette, cotton, polyester) but all share the common goal to cover all but the eyes of the face. Inside, a mesh-like embroidery drapes the face. Those of us who have tried one on, find it very claustrophobic.

None of the associates in the Bpeace program wear the burqa. They've moved on.
